Gluten is my B*TCH: Rants, Recipes, and Ridiculousness for the Gluten-Free

Gluten Is My Bitch: Rants, Recipes, and Ridiculousness for the Gluten-Free Paperback

Gluten Is My Bitch: Rants, Recipes, and Ridiculousness for the Gluten-Free in Paperback.  by April Peveteaux.

This is one of several books I’ve read on living the gluten free life and gluten related conditions like Celiac Disease.  This book is a sometimes funny (hilarious actually), informative and practical look at celiac disease.  I read this on my first trip, (after being diagnosed) to Siesta Key.  See: Trip Report: Gluten Free in Siesta Key.  Mostly on the flights to and from.  April had me literally laughing out loud at points.  This is a great book.

A First Look at Freshly – Chef Prepared, Gluten Free Meals Delivered to Your Door

Freshly meals are gluten free, packed with protein, free from added sugars and all natural.

You get to choose how many meals you want per week and you get to choose which meals you want.  Meals come fresh, not frozen.

My first Freshly Box!  I chose 6 meals, 4 Dinners and 2 Breakfasts.  The box was sizable.

The box was well packed and well insulated.  This is the top of the box as and shows the top ice pack.  Two ice packs were included, one on the top and one on the bottom.  For the 6 meal box, these are about the size of an 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper, maybe a bit larger.  The ice packs in this box were still, amazingly, frozen rock solid.  These are also reusable.

I decided to start with the Jerk Chicken.  That comes with brown rice and mango salsa.

Ingredients

The side (which shows up at the top of this picture) says… all natural, no refined sugars, high quality protein, gluten free, nutrient rich and freshly prepared.

Jerk Chicken with Mango Salsa & Brown Rice.  This was delicious and filling.

I’ll continue to update this post with additional pictures and thoughts as my subscription continues.  So far… I’m super impressed!  Bravo Freshly!

Nima: 40% Of “Gluten Free” Foods Tested Outside the Home… NOT Gluten Free

I pre-ordered the Nima Sensor.  If you’re not familiar the Nima Sensor is an on the go gluten detection device.  A pea sized sample and a couple of minutes tell you if the sample contains gluten.

I have not received my Nima Sensor yet.  Delivery has been delayed on at least two occasions.  That’s been a bit frustrating for me, but I understand it.  But still… Nima… Send me my sensor!  Update: my Nima shipped the day after this post went live.  Yay!

Ok, enough venting, back to the subject at hand.  While skulking around Nima’s website for clues as to when I’ll actually get my sensor, I came across an article that says in part…

In our early data from pre-order customers on the Nima app, we have seen that 40 percent of foods tested outside of the home that were supposed to be gluten-free have come back positive for gluten

One of the cool things about Nima is you can share your test results and view test results of other users.  The fact that an estimated 40% of supposedly gluten free food outside the home actually contains gluten is frustrating to me, but not surprising.  It’s been my experience that restaurant staff are, generally speaking, either poorly trained or just do not care.  It’s my hope that real time feedback will be a force for good when it comes to eating out gluten free.

Do Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Have Gluten? – Gluten Content Test

cln_img_2544

Pack of 36 Reese Peanut Butter Cups 1.5 Ounce Packages

As of this posting, 8/16/16, The Hershey Company lists “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – All Except Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Unwrapped Minis and Seasonal Shaped Items” on their dietary needs web page, under US Gluten Free products.  Emphasis mine, see link below.  Double check this page or contact the manufacturer to verify timely information.

To put that to the test, I performed a GlutenTox test. GlutenTox allows you to choose between 5 and 20 PPM.  I performed this test at the 20 PPM (parts per million) sensitivity level.

cln_img_2543

First… I sourced an entire box of 36 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.  Required for this test? No.  Required to fulfill a childhood dream? Yes. 🙂

I also used a mortar and pestle to help create a uniform sample for testing.

cln_img_2764

This was a bittersweet moment.  Kind of fun, kind of… “what are you doing to that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup?”

cln_img_2765

This is what a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup looks like after it has been subject to a mortar and pestle.

cln_img_2769

The test stick has two lines, the one on the left is the blue control line and should always become visible.  There is another possible line just to the right of that, that one is red.  That becomes visible if gluten is detected at the selected concentration.  As you can see in this photo only the control line is visible.  According to this result the sample I tested has a lower than 20 PPM gluten content.

Each GlutenTox test comes with single use pipettes, extract solution, dilution solution, sample scoop and a test stick.  The testing process is relatively simple and the instructions are clearly written.  This test gives you some flexibility as you have the choice between testing at 20 PPM (parts per million) or 5 PPM.  Under 20 PPM allows manufacturers to label certain foods as gluten free.

Update 1/2017: I’ve started to see some Reese’s packages actually labeled gluten free.
