Sun Bum – Gluten Free Sunscreen

71+4ekoyyiL._SL1500_

Last summer I was fortunate enough to find Sun Bum Moisturizing Sunscreen.  I do and have always needed and used sunscreen.  I have never enjoyed the feeling of putting on or having sunscreen on.  Most feel greasy to me.  Sun Bum is different.  It feels like you’re putting a good moisturizing lotion on.  It goes on great.  I’ve also found that it stays on well reducing the need for me to re-apply.

As I was thinking through things I need for an upcoming vacation, I happened to think… oh no, I hope Sun Bum is gluten free.  I was happy to see that it is gluten free!

Sun Bum is available in SPF15 SPF30, SPF50 and SPF70.  Travel sizes are also available.

As always verify current gluten free status by reading labels and checking with the manufacturer as formulations can change over time.

Kitchen Gadgets: T-fal FR8000 Deep Fryer

91gB0JDWHEL._SL1500_

Since I have Celiac Disease [About Me], I can’t eat fried foods at most restaurants because of cross-contamination concerns.  At the end of the day… that’s probably a good thing.  Truth be told, I ate too much fried food pre CD.  Having said that, I would still like the concessional fried whatever.  I’ve been shopping around, compare reviews, cost and features and just settled on the T-fal FR8000 EZ Clean Deep Fryer.

It has… a 2.65 lb food capacity, a 3.5 liter oil capacity and includes a two position basket (1 position for frying and one for draining).  It has an immersed heating element and (of course) an adjustable thermostat. 1,700 Watt heating element.

One of the features that got me was the automatic oil filtration system.  When you activate this the FR8000 filters the oil and drains it into a separate sealed plastic container for easy storage.  Some of the components are also dishwasher safe.

Gluten Free Things I Actually Like

81xMQIn2JjL._SY606_Pictured: Justin’s Nut Butter Mini Peanut Butter Cups Dark Chocolate

As far as eating at home, I am able to eat many of the same things that I enjoyed prior to being diagnosed with Celiac Disease.  Many without modification.  A few with slight modifications.  For example, the chili that we make has always been gluten free, we just never knew it.

Beyond that, I have tried (and am trying) off the shelf gluten free items.  Some of those items look like the thing that they are supposed to be… but do not taste like it.

All that to say… there are some gluten free food items that are very good and that I enjoy.  This post is dedicated to listing those.  I’ll add to it as I come across more items.

That’s all for now, stay tuned for updates

Free Justin’s GF Nut Butter with Peanut Butter Cup Purchase – YMMV

cln_img_1722

Since going gluten free because of my celiac diagnosis, I stumbled across Justin’s Nut Butter, specifically their peanut butter cups.  They are delicious.

My local Hy-Vee grocery stores holds a gluten free event every month or so.  As part of that they sometimes offer 10% off all HealthMarket items.  They also had Justin’s Peanut Butter Cups on sale for $1.  With the 10% off they came down to 90 cents each.

I noticed that the packaging contained a coupon good for one free Justin’s Squeeze Pack of Almond, Hazelnut or Peanut Butter.

Whammo… I picked up my free nut butter on my next trip to Lucky’s Market.  These were selling for $1.50.  So, I spent 90 cents total on the equivalent of about $3 in merchandise.

I’m marking this as YMMV because I don’t know how long they will continue to include this coupon or if your package will contain it.  It was a nice surprise for me.  With all sales and coupons stacking, it was also a bargain.

Is That Gluten Free? iPhone App

icon175x175

I have a couple of go to helper apps for living gluten free that I really depend on.  One is Find Me Gluten Free.  I’ve already talked about that here on GF Finds.  That helps you find restaurants that serve Gluten Free and includes reviews and features of those restaurants.

Is that Gluten Free is more for grocery shopping.  The folks behind this app keep tabs on lots of grocery items and report their status.  The list of products and manufacturers is large, but if you run into a manufacturer that has a gluten free list that’s not showing up in Is That Gluten Free, use the handy contact feature to let them know about it.  One other cool feature of this app is that it provides a comprehensive list of gluten-containing ingredients.  Very handy if you are trying to decipher ingredients.

Thoughts About: Triumph Dining Gluten Free Dining Out Cards – English and Spanish

51j3EVs0IDL._SX271_BO1,204,203,200_Gluten Free Dining Out Cards (English and Spanish Edition) by Triumph Dining

These cards help to explain to restaurant staff (in both English and Spanish) that you need to dine gluten free.

I posted about these earlier in April and said I planned on picking some up since I have a trip planned to Central America, specifically Guatemala.

Well, I did order them and have had a chance to take a look at them.  I’ve been apprehensive about going to a country where I do not speak the language (I do speak a little spanish… a little) with Celiac Disease [See: About Me].  It’s not the traveling itself that has me on edge, I love to travel.  As always… It’s Celiac that’s the issue.  This is my first major trip since being diagnosed.

These cards have put me to ease, by a good bit.  They are much more detailed when I compare them to free cards or apps I’ve found.  I don’t want to publish a picture because these are a work of Triumph Dining and I don’t want to give away their hard work.  The cards contain the following sections.. First: A statement telling the waitperson that I have celiac disease and that I must eat a special diet.  It asks for their help to do that.  Then… “I Cannot Eat”, “Please Check” and “I can eat”.  Each of these areas contain additional information and examples.  There is a “Thank you” statement and finally a section on cross contamination.  One side of the card is in English and one is in Spanish.

Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Brownie Mix

81dWo5uOR6L._SY606SX450_SY606_CR,0,0,450,606_PIbundle-4,TopRight,0,0_SX450_SY606_CR,0,0,450,606_SH20_One of my first restaurant outings after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease was Outback Steakhouse.  By the way… Kudos to Outback Steakhouse for their gluten free offerings.  Anywho… I was happy to see they had a gluten free dessert… the Thunder from Down Under Brownie Sunday.  I had had that in the past and didn’t even know it was gluten free.  It’s pretty tasty y’all.

Knowing that delicious Gluten Free brownies were within reach, I picked up Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Brownie mix to give it a try.  I was very happy with the results.  It produces delicious brownies that are pretty well identical to gluten-containing brownies. Or at least when I remember of gluten-containing brownies.  When I run into something like this, I often wonder if my taste buds, perceptions and likes are skewed by not eating gluten.  After all having a “fill in the blank” can be better than having… nothing.  To test this, we made a pan of these brownies last week when we had a group (of gluten eating) friends over and they were a hit.

This mix produces great brownies.
